VITA Volunteer Training

VITA Volunteer Frequently Asked Questions

Do volunteers need tax preparation experience to volunteer?

Not at all. Volunteers receive tax training from IRS-trained instructors and can serve in a variety of roles. Many volunteers begin with no prior tax experience. Training and annual certifications are free. The main requirements for becoming a VITA volunteer are time, a willingness to learn and share knowledge with taxpayers, and comfort working with computers.

What volunteer roles are available?

We currently offer four different volunteer roles, each requiring different IRS certifications. They include Greeter/Intake Specialist, Tax Preparer, Quality Reviewer and Site Coordinator. For more details about each role, please click here.

How many hours does it take to train to become a VITA volunteer?

New volunteers usually start with a one-hour orientation and a seven-hour tax law class. Returning volunteers, or individuals who already have a strong tax experience, usually attend the one-hour orientation. Additional in-depth tutorials are available on the Link & Learn IRS website.
